3 Important Things to Keep in Mind When Designing Your Kitchen
Designing your own kitchen can be a wonderful experience. You have the opportunity to customize it and make it your own. Start by keeping practicality, versatility, and quality in mind while designing in order to make sure you end up with a kitchen you’ll love.
Practicality
While everyone wants a picture-perfect kitchen, you need to be mindful of practicality and functionality. Think about your kitchen habits as well as your family needs. If you have small children, perhaps open shelving isn’t for you. If you cook a lot of big meals, you’ll need plenty of counter space. In any kitchen, you should consider including plenty of storage. You’ll want a variety of drawers in many sizes to store everything from pots and pans to silverware.
It’s also important to think about the spacing in your kitchen. It should be easy for you to move between the stove, fridge, and sink while you’re cooking. You’ll want to have at least 36″ between countertops so you can maneuver around within the space. Make sure there is clearance for the dishwasher and oven doors to open fully. Utilize lazy Susan or blind corner cabinets in the corners so you don’t have doors or drawers that won’t open.
Think about organization items that are nice to have, but not must haves that you can add in later. A pull-out trash and recycling cans incorporated into the cabinets, racks to organize your pot lids, or bins to store pet foods and treats. These are items you can add later as you use your kitchen and see a need to adapt.
Versatility
As you design your kitchen, you should make choices that will allow your kitchen to be versatile. This can mean being thoughtful when picking materials. Choose materials and finishes that will pair well with other elements of your kitchen. Begin by matching painted or wood cabinets with countertops, then bring in hardware that coordinates with the countertop edge and any moulding profiles you might be using.
Want a kitchen that is modern and edgy? Pair light and dark finishes in your cabinets and countertops. Looking for something more traditional? Use an ogee edge on your countertop then pair it with cabinet moulding and hardware that has some gorgeous detailing to it.
Quality
One of the most important considerations for your kitchen is quality. You want to make sure you pick materials that will last. Kitchens go through a lot of wear and tear so this is especially important. Your main concern should be tough, quality counters and cabinets as these will get the most use. When picking out cabinets, you want a material that won’t get too worn out or dinged up. They should be easy to clean and constructed well. For added quality, you can even get soft closing hinges that prevent your cabinet doors from slamming.
A lot goes into designing a kitchen. You need the right layout, the right elements, and the right materials. Before you make any final decisions, you should review your plans and make sure you have thought through everything necessary to create your ideal kitchen.
