How to Make Your Living Room Feel More Inviting
Have you ever walked into someone’s house and instantly felt at home? While you may have not known it then, you probably felt at home thanks to both the home environment and the aesthetics of its rooms. Here are several things you can do to replicate that experience and make your own living room a more inviting place.
An Open Floor Plan
An open living space is just what you need to make your living room—as well as the rest of the home—more inviting. Small living rooms can make people feel uncomfortable. Nobody likes to feel cramped or trapped.
Before you start knocking out walls, try to figure out how rearranging or updating your furniture could solve the problem of a cramped living space. For example, instead of filling your room with multiple items of furniture, create multi-utility elements within your living space—like building in a custom-made entertainment center complete with bookcases, or installing chic shelves for lifted storage and décor. Sometimes, a room can look cramped merely because of the color scheme or mismatching furnishings. You will want to use light or nude colors and be more simplistic in your decorations to give your living room a more open feel.
Use Natural, Earthy Colors
As mentioned before, colors can make a huge difference. Depending on the colors you use, you can make your living more (or less) inviting. The best colors to use in order to make your living room a more inviting place are natural, earthy colors like greens, blues, and browns. Warm colors are also a good bet since they exude reassurance and happiness—however, you should be careful not to paint a room too dark or use too vibrant of tones. So, try a light grey with turquoise and light wood accents—or soft shades of tan with muted greens.
Give it Curves
While straight edges can give a room a more ‘modern’ or ‘edgy’ feel, they do not exude the same feeling of comfort as rounder or softer edges. That does not mean that you can’t use stark lines to add dimension and contrast, it just means that you should probably find a happy balance of both soft and hard edges to make your home feel more inviting.
For example, if you have a rectangular coffee table, you should decorate it with a rounded vase—or the other way around. Or, if you have a striped rug, decorate the room with curved plant holders or circular storage baskets.
Everyone loves to be in a place that is both comfortable and welcoming. If your living room isn’t radiating those sentiments, there are so many ways—both small and large—to make your living room a more inviting place for both friends and family to enjoy.
