Identify Your Beach House Style

Beach house style contains the following elements:

• nautical stripes
• wicker, rattan, or sisal
• watery blues
• pale sandy shades of cream, ivory, beige and soft pink
• slipcovered furniture
• white washed wood furniture
• bead board paneling
• hurricane candle holders, beach glass colored glasses, and of course, driftwood

You’ll want to choose 3 to 5 of these elements and carry them through each room to create cohesion throughout the home. Doing so will help you narrow down your options when selecting decor so you don’t go the “theme” route. The goal is to give your home an overarching beach house style that is classic and tasteful. It’s important to be comfortable in your home, so make sure you pick elements that make you feel comfortable.

Get the Colors Right

Let the shoreline guide your color palette choices. Begin with blues, whites, and pale sandy shades. Want to go modern beach house? Bring in indigo and black. Like a fresher, more natural look? Bring in some greens and yellows. If you’ve got some outdoor space, beige and grey also go great for a porch or deck. Reds and corals make beautiful accent colors.

Keep It Light and Breezy

Making the most of the natural lighting coming in from the the windows is another key component. Use curtains made from light, flowy fabrics that will respond to breezes. Light or translucent fabrics can be great for creating that almost ethereal look to the curtains. Installing storm shutters not only look good, they can be a way to protect your home.
