Take BuzzFeed’s 10-Day Spring Cleaning Challenge

Are you up for a good, clean, fun CHALLENGE? Jessica Probus at Buzzfeed Life gives us a 10 day, 10 minute challenge to help us clear out and clean up so we can start spring fresh and anew. Let me be honest here, I hate to clean. I get bored with it quickly and I feel like I never do a good enough job anyway so … what’s the point? Well this time my bad attitude has been banished and I’m going to give spring cleaning my best efforts. I like that this is spread out over 10 days so it will give me a chance to reacquaint myself with good habits – like making my bed every day and not just when company is coming over.

Adriana Lopez at Porch points out that Spring Cleaning has mental as well as physical benefits in her article on Spring Cleaning and Home Maintenance so if you need something to de-funk your state of mind as well as de-funking your home now is the time to make that happen.

I’m going to start off with what you’ll need to know for planning and what items to gather into your cleaning kit. The over the next 10 days I’ll reblog the cleaning schedule for the day. Let’s begin!

Learn how to clean smarter, not harder: Make your home sparkle in less than 10 minutes a day.

Let’s face it: Cleaning can be a daunting task. And keeping things clean is even worse.

The BuzzFeed Spring Cleaning Challenge is here to help you break your cleaning routine down into small, easy steps. By tackling different rooms for only a few minutes at a time, keeping your home clean will start being a productive habit instead of feeling like an overwhelming chore. Best of all, these are tips you can incorporate into your daily routine all year round.

Here’s your cleaning schedule:

1. Spray bottle (with 1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 water solution)
2. Microfiber cloth
3. Socks (cotton or microfiber work best)
4. Plastic bags
5. Lemon
6. Duster
7. White vinegar
8. Eraser type cleaning sponge
9. Rubber band
10. Newspaper
11. Dryer sheets (used work best)
12. Antibacterial all-purpose cleaner (APC)
13. Paper towels

PLUS:
Vacuum
Toilet paper

Some overall tips to get you started:

Set a timer for the amount of time you’re going to clean — you’ll be surprised at how much you can actually get done in five minutes. Even better, put on your favorite song! Turn the volume up high and set your phone’s sleep timer to stop playing the music after one, five, or ten minutes (depending on how much time you have). Remember: You don’t need to try to deep-clean everything.

That’s because this challenge isn’t simply about the results — it’s about creating new healthy habits for your home. “You are already there,” says Leo Babauta, author of Zen Habits. “[Cleaning] is not a set of ideals to aspire to, a standard of perfection to achieve. This is a mindfulness practice, and if you are cleaning or decluttering mindfully, you have already arrived.”

Oh, and if any of the steps don’t apply to you (if you don’t have a dishwasher, for example), just spend some extra time on one of the other steps. Or, sign up for our daily newsletter reminders to get an exclusive bonus round suggestion for each day!

I added links to the cleaning products and supplies list to help you get started. I get all of my cleaning supplies at the Dollar Tree because I refuse to spend money on an activity that I don’t enjoy. There is so much cheap fun stuff at DT that it’s easy to get overwhelmed and off track. Oooooo – nail polishes! Does that happen to you too? Anyway, I’ve tried all of these products out and they work just as well as brand name supplies.

OK, so we can do this! You’ve got the daily chore list and you’re gathering together your cleaning tools and products. Let’s get the grime gone so we can enjoy the sunny spring weather!
