An Interior Designer or Interior Decorator?

Does an interior designer function the same as an interior decorator?  Both involve aspects of interiors but they are different activities. Interior designers makes changes to an interior space from renovation, like knocking down walls to selecting paint colors and fabrics.  Interior designers are also the point person between architects and contractors and the client.

An interior designer goes through formal training or schooling, such as earning a degree that includes the study of color, fabric, and computer-aided design training using programs like AutoCAD, AutoCAD 3D, 3D Studio Max, Revit, and SketchUp.  They also develop skills in drawing, space-planning, furniture design, and architecture.

Layers of lighting

“…if you need structural changes such as removing walls, adding new windows or doors, you need an interior designer. If you need help deciding on a style, choosing the right paint or furniture, the lighting fixtures or the accessories for your home, then you should contact an interior decorator.”

The interior décor aspect focuses on how a space looks or feels so they begin the interior decoration work after the renovation is complete.  An interior decorator will help the client decide on a style, choose the colors, the furniture, and the accessories.
