A Design Professional You Should Meet, Brigitte Kelly of Brigitte Kelly Design
Brigitte Kelly, of Brigitte Kelly Designs, is an Interior Designer with over 12 years of experience in residential and interior design. Interior designs comes as naturally to her as breathing and smiling because as she explains, “I was born into the business. My dad was a custom builder and my mom made custom drapery.” So just as her first steps were towards the sewing machine and her first words were “2×4” Brigitte grew up with a natural affinity for beautiful furnishings and careful attention to details.
These innate skills have served her well on all of her projects. Her favorite interior design moment came when she was given the responsibility of designing a home on Beverly Street in Dallas, Texas for a wonderful family she says she adores. In order to achieve exactly what the client had in mind she worked with items they had and added to it. Brigitte Kelly is courageous with color and style and she loves working with a client who is just as fearless as she is. “I used black and white linen with bold graphics and hits of mustard and red,” and she loves taking design just a bit further by using color to, “play off the French Country look but making it fresh.”
There have been times when the use of bold color has made Brigitte feel outside of her comfort zone, but she loves the challenge. The project she is working on now is one of those times. “I am working with a very young couple needing to bring in colors from their heritage like big bold blocks of orange, peacock-blue, and apple green to keep things fresh and youthful.”
In her 12 years of experience as an interior designer Brigitte credits being orderly and organized for keeping all of her projects flowing. She counsels interior designers who are just beginning their careers that there will be lots of measuring and paperwork ahead, “Keep it organized so you will to continue to love your business!” There is also some advice for the home owner who wants to give interior design a try, “keep going and keep making mistakes,” and she adds, “learn from trial and error.” One of the ways she encourages home owners to keep their interiors looking fresh is to, “arrange furniture because it’s easy to keep moving it all the time and trying out new ideas with very little commitment.” Her only warning is to put the sponges painting kits away, “faux finishes are out.”
Brigitte also recommends that interior designers of every kind carry with them a smart phone to research new products, snap photos of things that inspire, and make contacting clients about ideas and trends easy. Although she calls her smart phone her “life”, Brigitte is about to purchase an iPad and is certain it will be her, “go to tool over all of the above.”
