Could Frankenstorms Reach Chicago?

I was thinking of all our friends along the east coast today when I got a text message that the waves from Lake Michigan crashing on to Lake Shore Drive are reaching 22 ft. now and are expected to reach 50 ft. It’s possible that Chicago could experience some Frankenstorms as Hurricane Sandy meets the cold northern air coming down out of Canada. So I’m posting tips on how to protect your home and interiors from anything that might come your way.

22ft Waves on Lake Shore Drive

1. Move outdoor furniture and other items indoors, like grills and balcony furniture. It can become a projectile in high winds.
2. Check to make sure your window air conditioning unit is securely attached or bring it inside as well.
3. Know where the electrical power, water, gas, and other utility services within your building at main switches are within your building and how to turn them off if necessary.
4. Wind pressure and blowing debris can break windows and blow in doors. Stay inside but away from sliding glass doors, large picture windows, skylights, french doors are especially vulnerable.
5. And assemble your safety and survival kit before the storms hit. Flash lights, radios and extra batteries, candles and matches, water and canned food, and blankets might all be needed.

What are you doing to prepare for the bad weather about to come through?
