How to Get Your Home Warm Weather Ready

When winter finally let’s go, your home can feel a little tired. The windows have been closed up for far too long. To celebrate the coming of spring and summer, it’s time to make your home warm weather ready again! Here are a few things you can do to get your home ready for the rising temps.

Give It a Warm Weather Refresh

Work your way around each room with three containers. You’ll need a trash bag for things that are really garbage, a box for items you either want to sell or donate, and a clothes basket for items that need to be put in their proper location. By clearing the flat surfaces in your home, you prepare for fresh air. Once things are sorted, tossed and stored, wipe down all the flat surfaces and set out fresh potted herbs and flowers to add a bit of green and a fresh scent. Keep summer decor small and low. Then you can open the windows and let the breezes blow.

Lighten and Brighten

Clean your blinds and wash as much of the windows as you can safely reach. Wash your ceiling fan blades and check the globes for dust and debris. Consider painting an accent wall or brightening a set of bookshelves by painting the back wall of the unit. Every time you move something, dust, vacuum and clean the area before putting things back.

Build a Deck

Adding a deck to your home boosts your living area and generates more fun. There are several features you can put in your deck to make it ideal for parties and gatherings on warm weather evenings. While the size of your deck will be heavily impacted by the shape of your home and the size of your yard, you can add features such as built-in seating with storage along the railing edge. Seating tucked into a corner creates a great conversation pit for a quiet evening chat with loved ones.

Incorporate Water

Adding a water feature to your backyard, deck or patio is a great way to create a soothing oasis of privacy. Even apartment dwellers can create a small water feature with a solar floating fountain. Freestanding water features can be as simple as a beautiful bowl stocked with plants or as complex as a wall-mounted fountain. Remember that one of the most soothing features of a water feature is the sound, so try to keep the water feature near the primary seating space.

Consider a Free-Standing Structure

If your yard is especially large, you might consider a free-standing structure out in the yard. A pergola or screen house can offer family members and visitors a chance to enjoy the breeze minus the bugs. If you’re not sure about a permanent structure, consider setting up a collapsible screen house for your next outdoor party. For those who live in regions where mosquitoes and flies can be a problem, a screened-in structure can make or break a party. When you’re ready to build a permanent structure, don’t forget to run water and gas to the building so you can run fans and set up a small bar or kitchen.

Lounge by the Pool

Modern pool construction options run the gamut from a high-commitment in-ground feature to a temporary vessel for the hottest part of the year. Even if you’re only test-driving your poor layout, make an investment in the underlayment. Rough ground, sticks, twigs, and pebbles can signal an early death for a backyard pool. The time you spend clearing the ground and putting down whatever is required can save you a great deal of worry as the heat rises.

You can make pool ownership easier on the inside of your home by setting up a towel station near the door closest to the back door. Create a spot to stop, wipe the sand from feet, leave wet flip-flops behind, and hang a swimwear cover-up. Pools can lead to a great deal of mess inside. Having a drop-off spot just inside the door can reduce the housework created by pool ownership.

Adding a bit of warm weather pizzazz to your cozy, winter-snug house will be easier as the spring comes on. Refresh for your decor for the summer by moving around your houseplants and adding some fresh potted herbs to the mix. It’s the easiest way to freshen the air in your space. An outdoor deck or pergola can create a beautiful outdoor spot to dine, relax, read a book and chat.
