How to Redo Your Bathroom to After Water Damage

Recovering from water damage can be frustrating for new homeowners. When water damage happens in an older home, it might be necessary to redo the bathroom entirely to make sure it does not happen again. If you want to give your bathroom a redo, here are some of the top ways to prevent it from happening again.

Add Ventilation

One of the most common ways water damage happens is poor ventilation. Particularly in humid areas, you should have plenty of ways to get steaming water out of your bathroom. Install a fan or dehumidifier to combat the water in the steam from the shower or sink. Bathroom windows have become increasingly popular to let the steam out as well.

Without proper ventilation, mold and mildew are likely to develop throughout the bathroom (particularly the darker areas.) Mold will then absorb the water and make your damage problems even worse. Mildew can also make your bathroom dangerous to stay in for too long.

Waterproof Flooring

Wooden floors in bathrooms can be popular—particularly in older homes. There is a huge problem with these types of floors: they are especially susceptible to water damage, and have a higher likelihood of rotting away if water damage is not taken care of.

Thankfully, there are other options for your bathroom. Wood plastic composite flooring is resistant to humidity and water. Tile flooring is also a better choice for bathrooms than wood as well. If you are not looking for a complete replacement of your floor, you should invest in new, clean bathroom mats. Set them near areas that are likely to have water damage problems.

Install New Fixtures

While flooring and ventilation will help prevent water damage that occurs over years, your pipes and fixtures might have problems that make an immediate difference when you fix them. Test out the different nozzles and fixtures on your bathtub, showerhead, and sink to see if there are any leakage problems potentially coming from the pipes—or the fixtures themselves.

The issues should be easy to find, and if they are on the surface, you can buy new nozzles at any hardware store. If you cannot see anything, but are still facing severe water damage, you might need to call in a plumber to see what the problem is.

You can stop water damage from happening. Follow these steps, and you will be able to protect your bathroom from mildew, wood floor rot, and consistent leaky pipes.
