How to Transform Your Home on a Budget

If you’ve been itching to give your home a face lift but are currently strapped for cash, don’t worry! There is still a way you can make your design dreams come true. Here are a few things you can do to make your home look the way you want it without breaking the bank.

Rearrange the Room

Rearranging is the most cost-effective design technique out there: the only costs are your own time and effort. Although it’s completely free, rearranging the room can make a big impact. Many homeowners don’t realize how much of an impact the arrangement of their furniture can have on the overall aesthetic of their home.

Before you begin the heavy lifting, draft out a few different arrangements on a piece of paper. Articulate your vision for the space—how do you want the space to function in order to best fit your needs? Next, choose a focal point around which to arrange your furniture. This will give your design the structure it needs to feel intentional and orderly. Work from biggest to smallest: think about where the biggest pieces of furniture will fit, and then work the smaller pieces around them.

Get Creative

A small budget means you have to get creative with the décor. Play around with colors, patterns, and textures. Try combining different types of materials for a unique, personal flair. Find a color scheme or piece of artwork that inspires you. There are lots of places where you can find cheap items that can enhance your living space. You also might consider decorating with live plants, or a meaningful family heirloom. Have fun, and dream big!

Keep it Simple

You don’t need to upgrade every single item on every single surface in order to transform your home. In fact, you can make significant improvements to the design of your home, even when you’re on a small budget. Changing the carpet, painting the walls a fresh color, investing in quality lighting, or resurfacing your cabinets are simple ways you can give your home some love without spending a fortune. Each of these items on their own can transform your house, even if you don’t have the funds to do them all at once. Learning how to complete these items yourself will help you save money on hiring a professional. As you keep it simple by working on one project at a time, you’ll be surprised how good your house begins to look.

My favorite trick is to shop from your own inventory of furniture. Look at what a difference these unused living room chairs and pillows make in the bedroom. What a difference a light color rug makes! It lightens up the dark wood floors and the whole bedroom.

So start your home’s transformation by rearranging some rooms, getting creative, and staying simple. Remember, a transformation doesn’t have to happen all at once. As you start small and have patience, you’ll begin seeing the results you want.
