Make the Most of Your New Construction Home

When it comes to designing your new construction home, there are a million details to be aware of. There are so many choices for siding, flooring, window framings, and it seems like a million other fixtures and design elements. It’s an exciting time when your dream home starts to take shape. As you’re making all of these decisions, keep in mind these details that are often forgotten.

Extra-Extra Storage Space

Plan for plenty of storage space then add some more. Really! Not having enough storage will leave your home feeling cluttered. As you look at the architectural drawings for your future home, analyze each room and assess the storage available in that room. Are there enough coat closets in the halls? Is there adequate storage space in what will be the playroom?

If it feels difficult to add in more closets, think about other ways that you can add storage. Having built-in cabinets and shelving in certain rooms, like the family room, can give your more storage in a different way.

A Multi-Functioning Kitchen

The kitchen is the center of your home. It’s the place where to make all the meals and what we learned this past year is that families also need adequate space for everything else. Plan for room to handle multiple different tasks from entertaining to helping kids with homework.

You’ll want to make sure you have enough cabinet and drawer space for storage, a pantry cabinet for food, and a utility closet for cleaning items. Making sure you have enough countertop space that will serve as a preparation area near the range and sink is important too. You’ll also want dedication stations areas the coffee machine and toaster or other small appliances you use daily. Oversized appliances can make your kitchen feel cramped, so be aware of how much space the refrigerator or double oven might take up in your space.

A Split Bathroom Design

When it comes to designing the bathrooms in your home, you may find yourself inspired by different styles on Pinterest. Maybe you’re drawn to white marble or to soaker tubs. And while it’s important that you make your bathroom the spa-like oasis that you want it to be, make sure you think about the specific situation you’ll be in and what kind of setup will work best.

For example, as you’re planning the bathrooms that will serve some of the bedrooms throughout the house, dividing the sink and toilet space from the shower and tub space may not be as glamorous as what you originally had in mind. But it will be more functional if multiple children have to use the bathroom—your son can brush his teeth while your daughter is showering.

A new construction home is a great way to plan from scratch for the way your family lives. There are so many details to keep track of, so focus on what is most important to you. By planning for plenty of storage and multi-functional kitchens and baths you will have designed a house that will grow and change as you do.
