I’m planning an urban exploration tour to take some pictures based on the gorgeous photography of urban decay in Gary, Indiana captured by David Tribby.  Gary was built on the shoulders of the United States Steel Corporation in 1906 but as steel production began to grow overseas and U.S. production declined, the city began to empty out and the once thriving downtown area became a ghost town.

Tribby brings up an interesting point about throw away culture in the United States.

“I believe architecture is a strong way a community identifies itself. Other countries use their buildings for hundreds of years, they seem to care more for their history. Simple preservation techniques could of kept these buildings viable, but now most are too far gone to renovate or too expensive to tear down.  …I believe if preserved several of these buildings could still play a key role in Gary’s revitalization.”
